Biography

Cristina Van Roy, soprano

Born in Mallorca, Cristina Van Roy began her musical studies at the Professional Conservatory of Music and Dance of the Balearic Islands, where she studied with Antonio Aragón. She subsequently moved to Madrid to continue her training at the Reina Sofía School of Music, in the Alfredo Kraus Vocal Studies Department, under the guidance of professors Ryland Davies and Milagros Poblador. At the University of the Balearic Islands, she obtained a qualification as an Expert in Choral Conducting.

As a solo soprano, she has developed an extensive career in recital, opera, zarzuela and symphonic-choral repertoire, performing both in the Balearic Islands and in various cities across mainland Spain.

Her repertoire encompasses works from a wide range of styles and periods, including Vivaldi’s Gloria, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Stravinsky’s Two Poems of Balmont and Three Japanese Lyrics, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Donizetti’s Parafrasi del Christus.

Within the Baroque and Classical repertoire, she has performed, among other works, J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and the Pentecost Cantatas BWV 59, 4 and 172; Handel’s Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne, Dettingen Te Deum and Messiah; Rutter’s Requiem; Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace; Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, K. 626 and Coronation Mass, K. 317; Fauré’s Requiem in D minor, Op. 48; and Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living.

She has collaborated with ensembles including the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra, the Madrid Symphony Orchestra, the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra, Muzík Ensemble and L’Alcordanza Camerata Barroca. She has performed at venues such as the Teatro Principal de Palma, Teatro Real in Madrid, Teatro Cervantes in Málaga, Palacio de Festivales de Santander, Teatre d’Elx, Auditorium de Mallorca, Alicante Auditorium, Sony Auditorium and the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid.

Throughout her career, she has worked under the baton of conductors including Philippe Bender, Fernando Marina, Zsolt Nagy, Mihnea Ignat, Francisco Valero-Terribas, Martin Fischer-Dieskau, José María Moreno, Rubén Díez, José Miguel Pérez-Sierra and Plácido Domingo.

In the operatic field, she took part in the 27th Opera Season of the Teatro Principal de Mallorca, performing the roles of Erste Dame in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Wellgunde in Wagner’s Das Rheingold.

She has been a member of the Teatro Real Choir in Madrid, the RTVE Choir, the Europa Choir Akademie, the Capella Mallorquina and the Cap RoCat Festival Choir. She has also participated in the recordings In Memoriam, by contemporary organist and composer Bartolomé Veny, and 50 Aniversario by Capella Mallorquina.

Another highlight of her career is her performance of El Cant de la Sibil·la at Mallorca Cathedral, a tradition proclaimed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Her career has received recognition in various competitions and artistic programmes. During the 2017/18 season, she was awarded an AIEnRUTA Clásicos concert grant; in 2020, she was a finalist in the International Zarzuela Competition of Valleseco; and in July 2021, she won the first edition of Crescendo: Creamos Ópera, an initiative of the Friends of the Teatro Real Foundation.

Alongside her work as a soloist, she has developed a distinguished career in chamber music, regularly collaborating with pianists and vocal coaches such as Marcos Suárez and Jesús López Blanco. Since 2020, she has also maintained a permanent duo with pianist Joan Roig.

The Van Roy-Roig Duo explores the repertoire for voice and piano from a perspective that combines interpretative depth, sensitivity and a strong focus on the dialogue between the two instruments. Their repertoire ranges from classical works to contemporary creations. The duo has collaborated with institutions including Academia 1830, CaixaForum Palma, Juventudes Musicales de Palma, Can Tàpera and Fundación ACA, with particular emphasis on the dissemination and promotion of Balearic musical repertoire.

Since the 2024–2025 season, Cristina Van Roy has been conducting the children’s choirs and the Municipal Choir of Andratx, developing a vocation centred on vocal and choral training and on bringing music to the local community.
